Sharing Stories of Freedom, Independence, and Belonging.

On October 5, Halifax Transit launched an accessibility campaign. The campaign shows why accessible transit matters. It also shares the services that help people with disabilities get around the city. As part of the campaign, Halifax Transit made commercials about five adults with disabilities and their stories. These stories show how important it is for everyone to move through the city with freedom, independence, and a sense of belonging (Halifax Transit, 2026). Four of the five people in the commercials are part of the Prescott Group community. We are very proud of them and thankful that they shared their voices.

Joy Banks said, “Adults with disabilities have full lives and need accessible transportation to get places.” Her words remind us that everyone deserves a safe and comfortable way to get to work, visit family and friends, and enjoy the city. Christine Riley said, “I think after seeing my commercial, maybe other people and families may want to try Access-a-Bus, and I think that is good.” Her story may help others feel more confident about using accessible transit. Robbie Slaunwhite said, “I felt good, I felt seen, and that my story was worth telling.” Tristan also felt proud to be part of the commercial. He said, “I have never been part of a commercial; I felt like I was doing something important.” These messages show why representation matters. When people see themselves included, they know their lives and stories matter.
