CRIME STOP: Prescott’s Crime Prevention Program Empowers People with Disabilities
An inclusive approach to safety and advocacy
Staying safe is important for everyone. That’s why Prescott’s Crime Prevention Program is making safety education more accessible, engaging, and empowering for individuals with disabilities. Through interactive learning, hands-on experiences, and community connections, this program helps participants understand their rights, identify risks, and build confidence in navigating the world safely.
A two-phase program designed for impact
The Crime Stop Program is structured in two key phases to ensure participants receive both practical knowledge and real-world application.
Phase one: Building accessible safety resources
A dedicated team of six researchers worked to create an easy-to-understand plain language resource covering essential topics such as:
- Self-Advocacy & personal rights – Learning to speak up for yourself and set boundaries.
- Home safety – Understanding how to keep your living space secure.
- Recognizing & reporting abuse – Knowing the signs and taking action.
- Internet safety – Navigating the online world safely.
- Transportation & community safety – Learning how to travel independently and safely.
“Being a researcher is fun—we get to help others, but we also learn a lot.”
– Tegan, program researcher
Phase two: Bringing crime prevention to life
Using the resources developed in Phase 1, three eight-week modules will be delivered, bringing participants together twice a week for fun, engaging, and interactive activities. These sessions are designed to make safety education both accessible and enjoyable, featuring:
- Hands-on learning experiences
- Special guest speakers from the community, including law enforcement
- Community outings to put newly learned safety skills into practice
Why this program matters
Crime Stop is about more than just learning—it’s about empowerment. By increasing the amount of accessible safety information available, the program helps to reduce instances of abuse and criminalization while giving individuals the tools they need to protect themselves and their community.
“I like the crime prevention program; it’s fun.”
– Donald, participant
Looking Ahead
With its inclusive and hands-on approach, the Crime Prevention Program is set to make a lasting impact in the community. Participants are gaining practical skills, building confidence, and forming strong community connections—ensuring that safety isn’t just a lesson, but a way of life.
