Our story begins in 1962. We started with a small activity centre in St. Mary’s Basilica Hall on Barrington Street. We served 10 participants. Our staff team included 2 employees and family volunteers.
By 1970, we changed our name to Adult Services Centre and continued to grow. We soon served 18 participants. We operated out of two centres — one on Oxford Street and one on Windsor Street. We offered new programs, including job placement. We also started a new business called Sunshine Catering.
In 1981, we moved to our current home on Prescott Street. Sunshine Catering became Fireside Kitchen, with both training and production kitchens. We started Atlantic Bag Manufacturers and sewed and screen-printed canvas bags.
In 1986, we started a work-in-community employment program that eventually became Prescott Employment Services.
On March 23, 1990, we became the Halifax Adult Services Society. We served more than 100 participants. We operated three businesses to help raise funds to support our programs: Fireside Kitchen, Atlantic Bag Manufacturers, and our Mailing Services.
In 2001, we changed our name to Prescott Group.
In 2023, Club Inclusion joined us to become a single organization. Today, Prescott Group serves more than 300 participants in Halifax and the greater HRM, with a staff team of 50.
We offer a variety of programs, services and recreational options to help individuals develop life skills, develop meaningful relationships, and increase independence and self-advocacy.
In addition to Prescott’s day program, we offer Drop-In Club, afternoon and weekend programs and special events, Summer Camp and the Inclusion Community Choir in Dartmouth.
Our social enterprises include North End Baking Co. & Café, Mail Services, Prescott Online Auction, and Pinkie’s Thrift, as well as job coaching to support community-based, fair-wage employment.
